June, 2008
The 2007-2008 school year is coming to a close and I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your partnership in the education of your child this year. I hope that the summer break gives you and your student(s) a chance for rejuvenation. For our graduating seniors and their families, our warmest congratulations and best wishes as you dive into your next challenges.
This has been an extraordinary first year for me as superintendent. Every day I have encountered so many people (parents, staff members, and community members) passionate about improving the lives of students and about providing the best education possible for them. Their enthusiasm has been contagious. Our work together motivates and stretches me professionally in ways I have never experienced. It has been loads of fun!
Besides the fun, we have also accomplished a lot. We have worked hard to improve communication and transparency throughout the district. Our new strategic plan sets the course of our work going forward in ways that I believe will make our outstanding district even better. The process of developing this plan allowed so many of our stakeholders a voice and a chance to learn about the tremendous challenges associated with providing an education worthy of the promise and talents of our students. I hope that you take the time to look over this document as it reflects attention to some of the important issues you see as we work to improve.
Just last week, with a 77 percent yes vote, our community approved Measure A, which will provide the district the $369 million to make major improvements in our facilities. We are enormously grateful for the confidence this vote reflects in our work. We are also thankful for the many, many volunteers and supporters who devoted time, talent, and treasure to this campaign. You have our commitment to work hard to be worthy of your confidence and support.
This week also marks the final days of work for many of our colleagues. At their June 3 meeting, the Board of Education honored the staff members for their hard work (listed below). Together, they represent over six hundred years of combined service to our district. The challenge of those of us still here is to continue the legacy of excellence these wonderful people have helped to create.
It certainly feels like summer. I am ready for it!
