QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience: 

  • Registered Nurse’s License required, B.A. or B.S. desirable;
  • Possession of current first aid and CPR certificates required; Medic First Aid Instructor’s Certification desirable;
  • Clinical Nursing experience or equivalent required.  Experience with medically fragile children desirable;
  • Valid California Driver’s License.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under general direction of the credentialed School Nurse, provide nursing and other related services.  Nurse Clinician incumbents are Registered Nurses who provide a variety of nursing duties (i.e., immunizations, administration and reading of PPDs, administration of insulin via the insulin pump or SQ injection within the guidelines of the PAUSD Diabetic Management Forms signed by the student’s parent/guardian and physician and under direction of certificated School Nurse., specialized supervision and monitoring of technology dependent students who are medically fragile, etc.), involving independent judgment and action within the scope of their practice and the Education Code.  The Nurse Clinician also monitors, interprets and intervenes, as well as performing duties designated by the credentialed School Nurse.

 

Specific duties include being able to:

  • Monitor, provide assistance, and administer insulin to diabetics;
  • Provide care for ill and injured children;
  • Conduct staff in-service on selected health topics and related issues;
  • Support the elementary school secretaries in maintaining accurate records of activities performed, i.e. medications dispensed, incident reports and interventions;
  • Support the elementary school secretaries in monitoring materials and medications to ensure appropriate supply levels and appropriate interface with parents providing medications;
  • Organize provision of TB testing to elementary school volunteers;
  • Supervise and administer immunizations and intradermal tuberculin tests.
  • Provide physical health care services such as specialized catherization, specialized tube feeding, etc., under the prescribed procedures as outlined in the guidelines and procedures by the California Department of Education (Green Book), as directed by the credentialed School Nurse;
  • Provide emergency care, prescribed medication regime, and prescribed procedures as outlined by the California Department of Education (in Green Book);
  • Assist in initiating and maintaining health and other related records and reports (Medi-Cal);
  • Make independent, immediate decisions;
  • Remain calm in an emergency situations;
  • Demonstrate respect for children and adults;
  • Accurately record, transfer, and relate information;
  • Provide active and reflective listening skills;
  • Present information in an organized manner;
  • Serve as Liaison Between District Health Services and the elementary school programs;
  • Help maintain a positive school health environment through open communication and effective human relations skills and team collaboration;
  • Adhere to schedules and timelines;
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

 

This position requires thorough knowledge of:

  • Nursing practices, procedures, rules and regulations;
  • Basic nursing skills and how to administer care for medically fragile children;
  • Health problems and concerns and the ability to communicate to the credentialed School Nurse;
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy;
  • Report writing methods and techniques;
  • Health problems and concerns;
  • Record keeping and filing.

 

This position requires ability to:

  • Communicate to the credentialed School Nurse;
  • Understand and follow prescribed medication regimes, and prescribed procedures;
  • Learn, interpret and communicate the goals, objectives and the general provisions of the program;
  • Provide specialized physical health care services and other nursing or related services;
  • Work independently under direct and indirect clinical supervision of the credentialed School Nurse;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others;
  • Maintain open communication;
  • Observe legal and defensive driving practices;
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions;
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records.

 

Physical Demands

Dexterity of hands and fingers to provide health care procedures; mobility to quickly respond to emergencies in various site locations, mobility to drive to various school sites to provide nursing assistance as needed, hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone and provide assistance to students; understand voice and speech patterns; seeing to read fine print.  Tasks involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).
