Math

Welcome to the 2009-10 school year in the Palo Alto Unified School District.   Our staff has been very busy preparing for the implementation of the new math program, Everyday Math (EDM).  Close to 200 teachers attended a 3 day Summer Math Institute, in which they had time to be trained on the program and begin collaborating with their colleagues.  In addition, all of the teachers attended differentiated professional learning workshops on the August Staff Development Day.   And the principals, with district office curriculum staff, spent a day with an EDM administrative consultant learning about the program and discussing ways to support teachers in implementing the new materials.   We have a number of on-going professional learning days planned throughout the school year for teachers, as well as parent information nights.  We will have a Fall  “EDM Author Evening” for the community to hear from the authors from the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project who developed this program over the past twenty years.  All of these meetings will be posted within the next few weeks so that the community can mark their calendars to attend.

Update on Professional Learning and Implementation Plan for the K-5 Math Adoption

During the summer over 180 teachers attended a three-day math institute with trainers from Everyday Mathematics (EM). Teachers were very excited about the new materials and felt that they were prepared to start implementing the program. On August 21st, the District Staff Development Day, these teachers attended a 'next step' session in which they discussed assessment, technology and planned the first unit. Those teachers that were not able to attend one of the summer math institutes were provided with an initial training focused on the materials. We will continue to have many opportunities for differentiated professional learning through Professional Development Collaborative days, grade level release days, and site-based collaboration.

Twenty-five fifth grade teachers attended the summer math institutes; thus participating in four days of intensive professional learning. In addition, several fifth grade teachers, along with 1st - 4th grade teachers, were involved in a Lesson Study Coaching Institute, at which time they analyzed the mathematics in a few of the EM games. Furthermore, during the Math Intervention Summer School, fifth grade teachers implemented unit 1 with their students. Through these experiences, a majority of fifth grade teachers are feeling more comfortable with the materials and excited about using them this upcoming year. Teachers will continue to collaborate with their colleagues, evaluating the program, assessing student growth and make modifications as needed. Lastly, there are 5th/6th articulation meetings scheduled to continue the conversation regarding best practices and transition from elementary to middle school mathematics.
