Intentional Technology Use

Leads: Derek Moore and Jackie Smith

Deadline: May 2027

Charge: Given the rapid evolution of AI and the growing local and national dialogue around technology’s impact on students, PAUSD is convening an Intentional Technology Use Ad Hoc Committee. By engaging diverse perspectives across our schools and evaluating current research, the committee will analyze existing district practices and policies to develop actionable recommendations ensuring technology serves a defined instructional purpose and protects student data and well-being. The committee serves as a collaborative advisory body centered on listening to our district-wide community and providing guidance for intentional technology use.

Considerations:

  • Pedagogical Purpose: Technology serves defined learning objectives with developmentally appropriate expectations tailored by grade span. Teachers are best positioned to identify when technology can enhance, not replace, human-centered instruction, and to engage students in understanding technology's impact on learning.

  • Equity, Accessibility & Student Wellness: All students have access to equitable learning tools, devices, and necessary accommodations as needed. Digital practices must support student well-being and protect meaningful face-to-face connection.

  • Digital Citizenship, Safety & Data Privacy: Responsible technology education, student privacy, and online safety are consistently integrated across the district. Digital tools are vetted for efficacy and compliance with Student Data Privacy policies and laws.

  • AI/Emerging Technologies:  A balanced, evidence-informed approach ensures students are prepared for the future while maintaining safety, critical thinking and academic integrity.

  • Operational Feasibility & Flexibility: Practices are scalable, sustainable and fiscally responsible across the K-12 organization. The committee will balance site and classroom level autonomy with district-wide expectations.
