Elementary Science Pilot & Adoption Committee

The Elementary Science Pilot and Adoption process is moving into the piloting phase for the 2021-22 school year, with the intent of presenting a recommendation for adoption to the Board of Education in the spring of 2022. Over the last two years, the committee, consisting of representatives from each grade level and elementary school site, has completed the exploration phase and prescreened all 12 approved science curriculums using the California Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Toolkit for Instructional Material Evaluation (TIME).

Through prescreening, five curricula were chosen to review during the paper screening phase. Most recently, the committee voted on the three curricula that will be piloted next year: Twig Science, California Inspire-McGraw Hill, and National Geographic Exploring Science. PAUSD is actively seeking elementary parents who are interested in serving on this committee for the upcoming year. Responsibilities of the parent members include attending five meetings and observing at least three lessons of the piloted curriculum. Interested elementary parents, please follow the application process below.

Application Process

The selection committee composition and adoption process are defined by Board Policy and Administrative Regulations for Selection and Evaluation of Instructional Materials (BP 6161.1 and AR 6161.1), which include the following clauses:

  • The Superintendent or designee shall establish a process by which instructional materials shall be reviewed for recommendation to the Board. This process shall involve teachers in a substantial manner and shall also encourage the participation of parents/guardians and community members.
  • Individuals who participate in selecting and evaluating instructional materials shall not have a conflict of interest in the materials being reviewed, as defined in administrative regulation.
  • Committee shall include two to five community members selected by the Superintendent or designee.
  • The community members selected shall represent a balanced perspective of the community at large.
