Superintendent's Update - October 30, 2020

From the Office of the Superintendent:

SUPERINTENDENT'S UPDATE

BOARD AGENDA CALENDAR

The tentative Board of Education calendar can be found HERE.

SECONDARY REOPENING CONSIDERATIONS AND SURVEY RESULTS

The secondary reopening survey results can be found HERE. The survey is still open and currently has over 3,500 responses between parents and students. The survey included more detail about plans and removed live streaming as a large-scale option. The preliminary results align with our experience opening elementary schools, with distance and hybrid options split relatively evenly.

The Board of Education will consider the plan for approval on November 10. Brief descriptions of both options are found below:

  • Distance Learning Program (DL): The proposed DL program would look and feel like a continuation of our current program with some possible exceptions. Students may experience a change in the order of their courses and/or they may be assigned different teachers. Students will maintain their Spring semester course selection, though the period of the course and/or the teacher of the course may be different than they were in the Fall. The start and end times of each day will remain the same. The bell schedule during the day will be the same for Tuesday - Friday; Monday bell schedule is being evaluated. Each week, DL students will have two 75-minute sessions per course.
  • Hybrid Program (H): The H program offers a combination of in-person (IP) and at-home asynchronous instruction. Students who select the H Program will be assigned into one of two groups, either A or B to reduce the number of people on campus. As with the DL program, students may experience a change in the order of their courses and/or they may be assigned different teachers. Students will maintain their Spring semester course selection, though the period of the course and/or the teacher of the course may be different than they were in the Fall. The start and end times of each day will remain the same. The bell schedule during the day will be the same for Tuesday - Friday; Monday bell schedule is being evaluated. Each week, H student will have one 75-minute in-person class and be assigned 75-minutes of asynchronous work per course.

QUICK THANK YOU

I wanted to spend a minute to share some thanks. Several parents assisted with our latest survey and added tremendous value. We were able to COVID test about 170 PAUSD staff members (with zero positive cases) through the cooperation of our participants and everyone charged with operations and logistics. We have 1,400+ students back in classrooms due to the work of our classified staff preparation and dedicated teachers. Thousands of students are being served through distance learning in a program considered greatly-improved from a year ago. Professional Learning staff have created and delivered quality content for our teachers, and students have benefitted. Families have participated in multiple feedback opportunities and have shared thoughts to make us better. Site administrators, Instructional Leads, professional associations, and District staff have collaborated to keep up with changing conditions and directives. Students have been troopers and remained positive. Coaches have kids back conditioning and others are touching extra-curricular activities. It has been a team effort. Thank you!
