Instructional Aide - Job Coach
Salary range: 23
Reports to: Coordinator of Career and Technical Education and/or Director of Special Education
Under the general direction of Special Education Teacher, train and support students in a variety of vocational settings, following task analysis provided by Special Education Teacher.
- A.A. degree or equivalent required, and experience working with students with special needs, preferably in a vocational setting
- Satisfactory work history
- Successful experience demonstrating tact, courtesy, positive attitude and maintaining cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work
- Have and maintain valid California Driver's License.
- Assist the Special Education Teacher in writing individual task analysis
- Coach and/or supervise students individually or in small groups to reinforce and follow up vocational activities under the direction of the Special Education Teacher
- Implement instructional and visual aids provided by the Special Education Teacher
- Assist students in creating a personal work schedule using electronic devices, cell phones, computer software, etc.
- Train students in the proper use of public transportation as needed
- Perform clerical duties such as filing or duplicating materials when needed
- Coach students on the attitudes, behaviors and skills necessary to perform their assigned tasks satisfactorily
- Work with Special Education Teacher and employers in training methods and behavior management or other related issues
- Participate in case reviews and goal planning
- Maintain a professional relationship with Special Education Teacher, Palo Alto Unified School District Staff, employers, parents, students, and others
- Perform other relevant duties as assigned to ensure quality and efficiency of program services
- Implement vocational activities provided by the Special Education Teacher
- Assume a high level of responsibility and independent activity
- Communicate satisfactorily in oral and written form
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions
- Operate modern office equipment and computers
- Maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted during the course of work.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Understanding of the application of task analysis as it appropriate to individual student's needs and assignments;
- Methods and attitudes required to motivate and encourage students and parental participation in the total vocational process;
- Microsoft Word and other usual computer applications.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, walk and/or stand for extended periods of time, bend, turn, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and taste or smell.
The employee must be able to push and maneuver students in wheelchairs, safely lift and support student's weight for transferring from wheelchairs, toileting, etc. Lifting and supporting students with weight up to 70 lbs. and frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing a minimum of 20 lbs.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to work in a vocational setting, a classroom setting, and out in the community in workplace settings. Job entails direct contact with teenagers/young adults. The employee is required to drive a car. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
There may be periods of time the employee will work in enclosed and narrow spaces with little or no natural light.
