PAUSD’s last mathematics textbook adoption took place in 2009. The new Common Core State Standards in Math were adopted by California in 2010, signaling a need to identify new materials aligned to these standards. Publishers scrambled to develop materials aligned to the new standards, but many were not available by 2014, when our schools would participate in the first round of revised assessments.
Recent Education Code Revisions enacted via AB 1246 (Brownley) authorized the SBE (State Board of Education) to adopt CCSS aligned materials for math. The SBE, adopted new instructional materials in January 2014. Like many districts in California, PAUSD was concerned with the quality of the newly adopted materials. Most materials showed little change from the previous adoption, likely due to publisher’s hasty process for updating old materials.
At PAUSD, we are very proud of our teachers and their dedicated professionalism. Many teachers began to search for any available quality materials to teach CCSS effectively. A district survey conducted in 2015 found that 40% of teachers were not using the district’s previously-adopted materials, as they did not align completely with the new standards. Because the California Department of Education had delayed new textbook adoptions after their fiscal challenges, teachers had identified their own supplementary materials to teach to the CCSS Math standards.
