In May of 2015 the Minority Achievement and Talent Development (MATD) Committee issued its final report to the Board of Education.  The committee had been formed some months earlier by Superintendent Dr. Max McGee for the purpose of uncovering underlying causes of the achievement gap in PAUSD and for the purpose of issuing a set of research-based recommendations to guide the district in advancing educational opportunities and outcomes for historically underrepresented students and students from economically challenged backgrounds.

Since that time PAUSD has made good on several recommendations and is actively working on advancing its work on others.  The work is overseen by Academic Supports and Equity Initiatives Coordinator, Mr. Keith Wheeler and is informed by the MATD Committee.  Many of the original members of the MATD committee are still involved in this work; others have moved on to pursue other passions.  Yet, the need to have a consistent body of committed advisors remains.  We invite members of the PAUSD community (parents, teachers, administrators, school counselors, students, and concerned citizens) to become regular members of this committee.  Information on applying to serve on this committee will be available on this site shortly.

Meetings, which are open to the public, are held from 6:00 – 8:00 in the PAUSD District Office at 25 Churchill Ave. on the following dates:

Questions regarding the work of the MATD Committee can be addressed to Keith Wheeler by email at or by calling 650-329-3767.

MATD Report 5.26.15.pdfThe Superintendent of the Palo Alto Unified School District appreciates the interest by the community in applying for the Minority Achievement and Talent Development  Advisory Committee.  The application period is now complete.

The purpose of this Advisory Committee is to prepare a set of strategic, evidence-based recommendations that, when implemented, will enable the PAUSD community to assure underrepresented minority students and other students from disadvantaged circumstances have the necessary opportunities, conditions, and supports that will empower and enable them to succeed as well as both realize and maximize their full intellectual, creative, and social potential. The report will identify critical issues and, for each issue, develop strategic recommendations that will include specific metrics for evaluating the extent to which each strategy was successful, suggested timelines for implementations, an individual or role (current or future) to lead each strategy, and cost estimates for implementing each recommendation. The Advisory Committee will also be asked to articulate any potential policy issues the Board should consider developing and adopting.
