PAUSD’s design for the scope and sequence for computer science instruction should bring CS to all students from pre-kindergarteners through 12th graders. The committee will review the National K-12 Computer Science and the California State K-12 Computer Science frameworks and make cogent curriculum design recommendations for implementation in our schools.

In the 2016-17 school year, the committee’s process led to a computer science (CS) curriculum recommendation by the Board of Education, and further discussion of a computer science graduation requirement in May and June 2017.

This, year, the 2017-18 school year, the committee will (1) design the system preparation for CS implementation in elementary, middle and high schools, (2) designate initial CS curriculum and duration of study for each grade level, and (3) plan teacher/instructor preparation. Grade band recommendations will be based on the Computer Science Teachers Association's Interim Computer Science Standards (2016) which form the basis of the emerging California State Standards for Computer Science.

Implementation is expected in a "roll-out" fashion--with relatively full implementation expected in the 2019-20 school year.

Although the committee membership may change each year, committee membership is largely informed by the Board Policy 6161.1 (textbook selection committee make-up).

The committee membership may include:

  • six to 10 computer science educators from each educational level: elementary, middle and high
  • three administrators, one from each educational level: elementary, middle and high
  • one English Language Learner educator
  • one Special Education educator
  • three to six parent representatives, with representatives having a current student from elementary, middle, or high school
  • two to four high school students, two representatives from each high school
  • three middle school students, one represenative from each middle school
  • ongoing community representatives organically rising from parents whose students have graduated from our schools, students who have graduated from our schools, or educational institutional representatives who are connected to PAUSD by educational programs.

The committee will be facilitated by the designee(s) of the PAUSD Chief Academic Officer of Secondary Education.
