The Elementary Education Department began its process of exploring the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) in 2013 with the STEAM Inquiry Team, currently named the STEAM Inquiry Group. Teacher leaders from each of the 12 elementary schools, Greendell, middle school, and the Elementary TOSA (Teacher on Special Assignment) Team met regularly across the school years to learn more about NGSS, explore STEAM Education opportunities, and implement innovative educational curriculum and instructional approaches.

In November 2018, the California State Board of Education released their approved list of publishers and science programs. The District will begin a process of exploring and piloting instructional materials for use in K-5 science programs. This process, along with the selection committee, will make a recommendation that will go to the PAUSD School Board in spring 2021. We are coordinating closely with the 6th – 8th science adoption process. The science adoption and subsequent implementation and professional development are part of the PAUSD Strategic Plan Goal A.
