Veteran Monterey County Educator Named Top HR Administrator Due to Retirement of Long Term Current HR Leader

During the Palo Alto Unified School District (PAUSD) Board of Education (BOE) Regular Board Meeting on Tuesday, May 9, 2017, Superintendent Dr. Glenn “Max” McGee introduced to the PAUSD community the school district’s next chief of the Division of Human Resources. Dr. McGee has appointed Ms. Karen Hendricks, currently the Interim Superintendent with Carmel Unified School District, as the next Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources.

“Ms. Hendricks comes to us with a wealth of experience from a classroom teacher to Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources in Carmel Unified and Santa Cruz City District. On a national level, she has worked with the New Teacher Center School Leadership Development Team, which will be a great asset in supporting our new hires and developing an improved evaluation system,” said PAUSD Superintendent Dr. Glenn “Max” McGee. “Pleasant and collaborative, she exhibits depth of knowledge and warm demeanor. Karen is systems thinker who has earned a reputation for both her caring and her courage. She is the perfect fit for PAUSD.”

During her introduction at the Board meeting, Ms. Hendricks thanked the Board of Education for the opportunity to serve PAUSD children saying, “I promise I will work diligently for our students, families, and staff. I look forward to joining you on July 1!”

Ms. Hendricks will transition into the role vacated by veteran leader Dr. Scott Bowers who is retiring at the end of the school year after leading the school district’s Division of Human Resources for 12 years (2005-Present). Dr. Bowers joined PAUSD as an assistant principal at Palo Alto High School (1993-1998) before he was named principal at Fairmeadow Elementary School (1998-2005). Before joining PAUSD, a mathematician, Dr. Bowers held leadership positions and taught with the San Mateo Union High School District, Stanford University, and in Freeport, Bahamas. He earned his doctoral degree in Administration and Policy Analysis—Elementary/Secondary Education from Stanford University.

Dr. McGee thanked Dr. Bowers for his years of service, saying, “I am very grateful for Scott’s commitment with leading human resources for this many years. Recruiting and retaining educators in California is no easy task and Scott has positioned PAUSD well, which is why we are a highly sought after district and remain very competitive with attracting the very best. While Scott’s duties always involve adults, he always makes decisions with children at heart knowing that what is best for our students is best for our employees and the school district as a whole. We very much appreciate the years of service he provided to PAUSD.”

Ms. Hendricks appointment is effective July 1.
