Update on Escondido and Fairmeadow Elementary Schools and Palo Alto High School Principalships

PALO ALTO, CA – Ms. Karen Hendricks, Interim Superintendent, is pleased to announce that principal appointments for Escondido Elementary, Fairmeadow Elementary, and Palo Alto High School will be presented for approval at the upcoming Board meeting on May 22, 2018.  We believe that these educators will bring strengths, positive energy, and commitment to student success at their school sites.
 
Escondido Principal - Dr. Marcela Simões de Carvalho

Marcela Simões de Carvalho comes to the Palo Alto Unified School District with 24 years of experience in education that spans many settings, grade levels and administrative positions.  She is currently serving as Principal of Gabriela Mistral Elementary School, in the Mountain View/Whisman School District, a dual immersion school.  Born in Rosario, Argentina, she was raised in Palo Alto where she attended Barron Park Elementary, Terman Middle School and Henry M. Gunn High School.  It has been her life-long goal to return to Palo Alto and the school district that provided her with the education that she considers the foundation of her academic achievements and professional career.
 
Dr. Simões de Carvalho has 12 years of administrative experience ranging from program manager, director of categorical and English learner programs, assistant principal and principal.  Fluent in Spanish, Dr. Simões de Carvalho holds a doctorate in education from the University of San Francisco and is a National Board Certified Teacher.  She has taught part-time at San Jose State University preparing teacher candidates in literacy, multi-cultural and bilingual education, and has instructed graduate courses on early literacy and language acquisition.
 
Dr. Simões de Carvalho replaces Mr. Chuck Merritt. 
 
Fairmeadow Principal – Ms. Iris Wong


Ms. Wong brings 13 years of experience in education to Fairmeadow.  For the past four years Ms. Wong has served Palo Alto Unified School District as a JLS Middle School Assistant Principal and Dean of Students.  Prior to coming to Palo Alto, Ms. Wong spent nine years at the elementary level in Cupertino Union School District teaching at the elementary level and working as an Administrative Teacher on Special Assignment for an elementary school of over 1200 students.
 
Ms. Wong grew up speaking Chinese and English at home, and she is comfortable with conversational Chinese (Cantonese). Ms. Wong received a Masters of Art in Administrative Education from Santa Clara University, a Masters of Art in Education from the University of California at Davis, as well as her Bachelor’s degree from the California State University, East Bay.

Ms. Iris Wong will replace Mr. Grant Althouse.
 
Palo Alto Principal – Mr. Adam Paulson

Mr. Paulson has been a member of the PALY administrative team since 2014 and has a total of sixteen years of experience working in education.  Prior to joining the PALY team, Mr. Paulson was Principal at Arundel Elementary School and an Assistant Principal at Tierra Linda Middle School in the San Carlos School District.  Mr. Paulson is a former U.S. History teacher working for both High Desert Middle School in Acton, CA as well as P.S.1 Charter High School, in Denver Colorado.  Mr. Paulson began his career as a paraprofessional, in Colorado, assisting students with special needs.
 
Mr. Paulson received his bachelor degree in area of arts in history from the University of Colorado, a master of science degree in education administration from Pepperdine University and he is currently working on his doctorate degree in Educational Leadership at San Francisco State University.
 
Mr. Adam Paulson replaces Ms. Kimberly Diorio.
