Stanford University honored Palo Alto Unified School District (PAUSD) Superintendent Dr. Glenn “Max” McGee and the PAUSD Board of Education announcing that it would create an undergraduate research fellowship award to honor PAUSD’s contributions to student potential through the school district’s Advanced Authentic Research (AAR) program, which allows PAUSD students to investigate an authentic topic of their interest. Stanford faculty and students attended the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, May 23, 2017, to present the school district with the award.

“PAUSD is actually a pioneer in peer-review journaling,” expressed Freedom Cheteni, Stanford’s curriculum and instruction director at the Peace Innovation Lab and executive director of the Designership Institute at Stanford, speaking about the PAUSD partnership with Stanford to produce a journal of student research - Journal A2I3R.  He added during his presentation to the Board, “I do want to acknowledge the district and award the Board for pioneering Advanced Authentic Research (AAR) and the launch of the open journal  A2I3R. We acknowledge the Board and the entire district for actually modeling what it looks like being an institution that supports the individuality and personalizing the curriculum for the child and also sharing through research.”

As part of the recognition to PAUSD and Dr. McGee, Stanford announced the launch of a new undergraduate research fellowship award titled the Superintendent McGee Advanced Authentic Research Award. The inaugural McGee fellow award was presented to Samuel Vasquez, a former PAUSD student currently attending Stanford. According to Stanford University, McGee Fellows will have the opportunity to empower students all over the world to engage in authentic research. The Designership Institute at Stanford will provide training and development in collaboration with current students and staff.

PAUSD launched AAR during the 2014-15 school year.
