Dear PAUSD high school students, teachers, administrators, and parents,

We are embarking on an important process that, once completed, will enhance our high school students’ opportunities for receiving scholarships and for admissions at some colleges and universities.  Later this spring the Board of Education will be asked to vote on what will become Palo Alto Unified School District’s (PAUSD) long-term practice for how grades are reported on high school transcripts at both schools.  Currently, a cumulative unweighted grade point average (GPA) is reported.  As you have probably heard, there is interest in our community of developing a system for weighting grades and reporting a weighted grade pointed average (WGPA) on the transcript as well or perhaps instead of a GPA.  I have been tasked with making a recommendation for a weighted grading system to the Board.  This task is a challenge because there are both advantages and disadvantages to reporting WGPAs, and schools throughout the state and across the country have an array of various WGPA systems. In order to develop a sound recommendation, I would like to hear from all of you. Your input is extremely valuable as it will help me shape the recommendation that I will take to the PAUSD Board of Education for final approval later this spring.

If you have five to ten minutes, please complete it now.  If you don’t have time now, please complete it by February 6.  The data and input collected from the survey also will help inform a final recommendation. The survey has an open ended question for providing ideas for calculating WGPA, but if you have ideas you would like to share, questions to ask, or comments to make, please email them directly to me at:  superintendent@pausd.org.
