S.T.O.P. is a mindfulness practice to help manage your reactions during difficult times. The S.T.O.P. practice can help whenever you are feeling distress by encouraging you to take a pause and build a space between your feelings and your action.
S = Stop what you’re doing
T = Take a few deep conscious breaths
O = Observe your experience just as it is; including thoughts, emotions, and sensations in your body
P = Proceed with intentionality towards something that will support you in the moment
Regular practice with S.T.O.P will develop the emotional intelligence and psychological flexibility required to navigate challenging moments. It helps slow down the stress response, switching from “survival mode” flight or fight responses to being able to take perspective and act purposefully. Using S.T.O.P builds self-awareness and self-regulation skills, helps us stay present, and mitigates the long-term health effects of prolonged stress responses.
