Charge Statement Purpose
The purpose of the Charge Statement is to clarify the work, the responsibilities, the authority, and the expected results of the PAUSD English/Language Arts Instructional Materials Advisory Committee.
Membership
As defined by Board Policy and Administrative Regulations for Selection and Evaluation of Instructional Materials (BP 6161.1 and AR 6161.1), membership on the selection committee shall include the following:
- One (1) Kindergarten-Grade 5 Classroom Teacher from each school site with a balance of primary and upper grades
- One (1) Elementary Teacher Representative from each Grade Level
- Two (2) to Five (5) Elementary Parent/Community Representatives
- One (1) Middle School Teacher Representative
- One (1) Elementary School Administrator Representative
- One (1) Elementary Reading Specialist Representative
- One (1) Elementary Special Education Representative
- One (1) Elementary English Learner (EL) Representative
- One (1) Elementary Spanish Immersion (SI) and Mandarin Immersion (MI) Teacher Representatives
- One (1) Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Education
- Two (2) Educational Services TOSAs (Facilitators)
Membership Term: The term is ad hoc. The committee meets until the committee submits its recommendation to the Superintendent or to the Superintendent's designee.
Purpose
- Review the English/Language Arts (ELA) Common Core State Standards (CCSS) aligned textbooks for grades K-5
- Review and select the texts and materials, given the information from the teachers during the screening period of ELA CCSS materials
- Review the teacher recommendations after the pilot periods are complete
- Select the texts or programs for use in grades K-5 beginning in August 2022

Authority
The Elementary English Language Arts Pilot and Adoption Committee will submit a textbook adoption recommendation to the Superintendent or the Superintendent's designee.
Products
A recommendation for an ELA CCSS aligned textbook or program for grades K-5, no later than April 26, 2022, to the Board of Education. The recommendation is to include a written rationale for the selection(s) in comparison to those not chosen on the finalist list.
Resources
The English/Language Arts Instructional Materials Advisory Committee will work within the existing State and District textbook budgets.
