Early Literacy - September 30, 2022

The PAUSD Promise Every Student Reads Initiative (ESRI) strives to reach the goal of ALL students reading at grade level by the end of third grade. Efforts from students, educators, families, and principals are essential in developing proficient readers. Recognizing that co-constructing meaning with others is necessary for success, the Elementary Principals Collaborative meets monthly to calibrate reading instruction. September's gathering was a buzz as Principals shared highlights and examples of the intentional work happening at their sites, which include kindergarten Boost Camp, implementation of the Benchmark Advance/Adelante reading curriculum, and the Orton Gillingham methodology of teaching phonics. Principals analyzed the kindergarten through fifth-grade student iReadyDiagnostic Reading results to determine classroom, grade, and site trends. This data informs the individual early literacy meetings led by Principals with teachers and specialists to identify effective instructional practices that will grow strong readers.
