Home & Hospital Instruction
The purpose of Home and Hospital Instruction (HHI) is to provide educational services in the home to students with a temporary disabling condition to help them maintain their academic performance during recovery (EC 48206.3, PAUSD AR 6183 - Home and Hospital Instruction).
A student with a temporary disability who is in a hospital or other residential health facility, excluding a state hospital, located outside of the school district in which the student’s parent or guardian resides, shall be deemed to have complied with the residency requirements for school attendance in the school district in which the hospital in located. (EC 48207)
It is the primary responsibility of the parent or guardian of a student with a temporary disability to notify the school district in which the student is deemed to reside of the student’s presence in a qualifying hospital.
Within five working days following notification from the parent or guardian, the school district shall determine whether the student will be able to receive individualized instruction, and, if the determination is positive, when the individualized instruction may begin. Individualized instruction shall start no later than five working days after the positive determination has been made. (EC 48208)
Ed Code Section 48207.3 (a) specifies that a pupil receiving instruction who is well enough to return to school shall be allowed to return to school immediately that they attended before receiving individual instruction, if the pupil returns during the school year in which the individual instruction was initiated.
Ed Code Section 48207.3 (b) specifies that a pupil who attends a school operated by a school district, who is subsequently enrolled in individual instruction in a hospital or other residential facility for a partial week, shall be entitled to attend school in their school district of residence, or receive individual instruction by the school district of residence in the pupil’s home, on days in which they are not receiving individual instruction in a hospital or other residential health facility, if they are well enough to do so.
Ed Code Section 48207.5 specifies that individual instruction in a pupil’s home pursuant to Section 48206.3 shall commence no later than five working days after a school district has determined that the pupil shall receive this instruction.
To be considered for HHI, parents/guardians should reach out to their child's counselor or school administrator to discuss the HHI application process.
